Flaine - in Haute-Savoie in the Northern Alps

Flaine is a popular ski resort in Haute-Savoie, near Geneva and Mont Blanc, nestling atop one of France’s biggest ski areas, the Grand Massif. At an altitude of 1,600m, Flaine is the highest resort at the heart of The Grand Massif ski area, which boasts an impressive 265km of ski slopes. The attractive villages of Les Carroz, Samoens, Morillon and Sixt Fer à Cheval, all link together with Flaine to create this acclaimed area with slopes to suit skiers at all levels.

Designed by the great French champion Emile Allais, Flaine sits in a well protected bowl with one of the best snow records in the French Alps. The highest lift, the ‘Grandes Platieres’ cable car takes skiers to an altitude of 2,480m, offering the greatest views of the Mont Blanc range. From here, you are spoilt for choice with access to several black, red and blue runs, there is even a green run allowing beginners to experience the spectacular views at altitude.

The ski area offers great skiing for all levels and the Cascades piste, is the jewel in the crown. Imagine a 14 km long slope, an altitude drop of 1,800m down into the village of Sixt Fer à Cheval, wonderful scenery, and never encounter one single ski lift.

It is also home to one of the biggest board parks in Europe, ‘Jam Park’ which is almost a mile long, a paradise for free-stylers.

The Col de Pierre Carrée (1,844m) offers the highest cross-country skiing area, with the best snow cover in the Alps.

Flaine is a convenient car-free, family friendly resort with many activities other than skiing such as ice driving, snow-mobiling, ice skating, dog sledding and husky sleigh rides. There is also a good selection of restaurants, bars, two shopping malls, cultural events and cinema. All services and facilities needed for leisure and sport (ski schools, nursery, children's clubs and activities for all ages) are also available.

There are also countless summer activities: tennis, archery, trial biking, mountain biking, paragliding, rock climbing and hiking with 150km of marked-out paths. There are also the natural parks of Six-Fer-à-Cheval and Passy, for unforgettable outings.

The village faces south with stunning views across the Flaine bowl and even boasts one of the highest golf courses in the Alps; Flaine-les-Carroz Golf Course with 18 holes at an altitude of 1,900m.

The architecture of Flaine is famous as it is the only ski resort in France listed as a historic monument. Constructed in the sixties by Eric Boissonnas & Marcel Breuer in the Bauhaus style of modern architecture, it manages to blend in to its surroundings at the foot of the ski slopes and many large outdoor sculptures by the likes of Picasso help to create a unique atmosphere.

Flaine-Montsoleil 1700m is a completely pedestrianised hamlet with direct access to the slopes and the chairlift which connects the vast ski area of Flaine and Grand Massif. It is only 500 metres from shops, restaurants and the many activities and services of Flaine Forêt.
